asinara is part of the “whale sanctuary” a specially protected area of mediterranean interest cetaceans crossing this area include fin whales sperm whales common dolphins striped dolphins bottlenose dolphins pilot whales beaked whales and risso’s dolphins during our excursions it is not uncommon to encounter magnificent dolphins.

asinara is an area of great botanical interest due to its geographical location the island hosts almost 700 plant species of which 30 are endemic representing about 5 percent of the total flora it is characterized by vast rocky surfaces with sparse vegetation of mediterranean shrubland only the elighe mannu area has a small holm oak woodland the vegetation has been reduced over time by excessive grazing of species introduced by humans consequently the most widespread plant is the spurge euphorbia dendroides toxic and therefore not grazed by local herbivores
