Asinara National Park Sardinia
fauna
The geographical isolation has allowed the fauna to find the right habitat to live and reproduce.
The Park has about 80 wild species of terrestrial vertebrates, many of which are of absolute rarity and high scientific interest. The mammals that meet in the Park are the hare, the weasel, the mouflon, the wild boar, the horse and finally the white donkey that gives its name to the island. Already in the twelfth century, the island is mentioned as “mother island of donkeys”. Their presence on this patch of land is very ancient. The donkeys live in the wild and their main characteristic is, besides being very small (1 meter at the withers), the white color of their mantle.

the territory hosts amphibians such as the Sardinian discoglossus, the emerald toad and the frog. The species of reptiles are as many as 11: Common tortoise and Biscia viperina. Seabirds are well represented by the Corsican Seagull, the Marangone with the tuft and the
Sardinian Partridge. Moreover, Asinara has been part of the so-called “Cetacean Sanctuary”, classified as a Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Interest. The Cetaceans that periodically cross this area are: Balenottera, Sperm whale, Common Dolphin, Stenella, Tursiope, Globicefalo, Zinfio and Grampo. During our excursions it’s not rare to meet the magnificent dolphins.
Asinara National Park Sardinia
Flora
Due to its geographical position and its lithological and morphological variety Asinara is an area of great interest from a bio-geographical point of view. The flora consists of almost 700 species, of which 30 are endemic and represent about 5% of the total flora. The presence of alien species also plays a particular role. The island is characterized by vast surfaces of outcropping rock, with scarce vegetation over mainly with shrubs; only the Elighe Mannu area has a small part covered by holm oak woods. The vegetation, in fact, has been thinned out over time due to excessive grazing by species introduced by man. Therefore it is possible to notice the vast presence of the only Euphorbia (Euphorbia dendroides) which, as toxic, has not been the subject of grazing by herbivorous animals.
